In ancient Jewish and Mesopotamian mythology, Lilith was the first wife of Adam, and she was therefore believed to be the first woman ever created. She was known as “ a hot fiery female who first cohabitated with man.” She was formed at the same time Adam was out of the same clay that he was made from. Stories about her changed over time and by the 13th century, it was said that she left Adam because he expected her to subjugate herself to him. She is linked to stories of the goddess Inanna’s Garden. In some stories she represents branches of a tree and in some other stories she represents a spirit in a tree. She has also been connected with owls. An old Babylonian carving known as the Burney Relief depicts a woman with the feet and wings of a bird resting on the backs of lions and standing next to owls. While some people consider this a depiction of the goddess Ereshkigal, others consider it a depiction of Lilith. She is also associated with the Mesopotamian goddess named Lamashtu, who was feared as a deity who created nightmares, brought death, and harmed expectant mothers and babies. Some Arabic folklore says that she was rejected by Adam and took Iblis as a mate instead, birthing demons. The story says that to this day, as revenge on Adam, she pursues pregnant women and children, seeking to harm them. A passage from the Dead Sea Scrolls in Songs of the Sage lists Lilith among destroying angels, demons and as one who will fall upon men and lead them astray. In the Midrash Rabbah, she is not called by name. Instead, it is said that after the first Eve ‘returned to dust’, Jehovah created a second Eve for Adam.
