What Are Dreams?
Psychology Today says “Dreams are imaginary sequences- some with clear narratives and some without- they play out in people's minds as they sleep. Most dreams consist of a series of images, sensations, and emotions, and range from pleasant and exciting to boring or even terrifying.” Merriam-Webster online defines them as “ A series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep”. They can feel so real, you swear that they're actually happening, or they can be other worldly and surreal to the point that you wonder how your mind could come up with such things. Not everybody defines dreams this way though.
Some people believe that dreams are just our minds occupying themselves while we sleep, but some people see our dreams as something far more important. To some ancient peoples like the Celts, dreams provided a portal to the other world, a way to communicate with the dead, a way to receive messages from gods, goddesses, and spirits, or a way to foretell the future. In some scriptures like the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, dreams acted as visions giving people messages from the divine or from angels. Some people see dreams as visions or messages from the spirit realm, and some people believe that dreams are just another form of communication that instructs us on spiritual matters and matters of the heart. Beyond this however, sometimes our subconscious mind gives us messages about our thoughts and feelings, and brings buried emotions to the surface that we must face at one point or another. Why Do We Dream?
Different experts have proposed different explanations for why we dream. Sigmund Freud said that dreams were wish fulfillment and he also said that dreams "Serve the purpose of prolonging sleep instead of waking up. Dreamsare the guardians of sleep and not its disturbers."Carl Jung said dreams are a way for us to balance things in our life that are in conflict with one another. Psychologist Calvin S. Hall believed that dreams come from ideas and our thoughts and they could help us to understand ourselves better. Ernest Hartmann believed that dreams helped us to process trauma. Plato believed that dreams are repressed desires manifesting as images in our sleep.
Not everybody thought of dreams as scientific, though. The ancient Hebrews believed that dreams were spiritually significant. Good dreams were from their god, and bad dreams were from malevolent spirits. An example of this is when the prophet Samuel would lie down to sleep next to the Ark of the Covenant at the temple because he believed he would receive the words of his god that way. The Greek god Morpheus was believed to send messages to people who slept at his temples. Deepak Chopra said that sometimes dreams stir creativity and other times they illuminate uncertainties about the future and that dreams can be unpredictable. What is the Meaning of Dreams?
Different dreams mean different things to different people. If you're going through an especially stressful time in your life, and you're having a lot of anxiety about the future, nightmares are not unusual. They can just reflect the fact that you are in a state of mental turmoil which carries over into your sleep. If the ancient Hebrews were right, dreams are messages from the powers that be. Some people believe that dreams are prophetic and speak of what will come to pass in the future. If you don't feel that your dream was the voice of a goddess or a god, and you don't believe that it's a dream telling you what's going to come to pass, then maybe the things that are going on in your life are playing out in your sleep.
