What is Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign?

By Lady Saoirse

Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs all tell you a lot about yourself and where you are going in life. That’s why some people call them the three most important signs in your birth chart. Calculating these is easier than you think thanks to modern technology, and once you do, you can learn what the meaning of each of your three most important signs are.

When you were born, all the planets, constellations, and stars were in a particular position in the heavens. Astrologers tell us these things determine a lot of things about our personalities and what kinds of things we will do in our lives. There are three major signs that it is important to find out about if you want to know all about yourself, your love life, and your future, and who you are deep down to the core, including how you present yourself to other people. Join SpiritualBlossom as we learn all about Sun, Moon, Rising Signs, and what they mean to you.

What is a Sun Sign?

Your Sun Sign, also called your Star Sign, represents which of the twelve Zodiac signs the Sun was in at the moment of your birth. This tells you your main personality characteristics. Of course, we can change things about ourselves, but our basic natural tendencies remain the same for our whole lives. Everybody born the same day as you has the same Sun Sign, and the Sun moves through each sign over the course of about one month. Some people discover just their Sun Signs and use this information to discover their best and worst habits, what type of job they can excel at, and what Zodiac Signs they get along best with. The Zodiac Signs in general are grouped by elements, qualities, and dualities and these things tell you a lot about yourself.

Elements

Each of the signs fall into elements, with three signs being ruled by each element. The elements of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water bring their own traits they instill in their signs.

Fire

Fire

The Fire Signs are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius and they are passionate, ambitious, and natural born leaders. On the dark side, they can be impulsive, aggressive, and pushy when they want to be. Read about Fire here: What are Fire Signs of the Zodiac?

Earth

The Earth Signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. They are hard-working, reliable, and loyal. They can be stubborn, manipulative, know-it-all sticks in the mud.

Air

The Air Signs are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. They are sociable, flexible, and charming. They can be bossy, flaky, and cold-hearted when they feel like it. Read about Air here: What are Air Signs?

Water

The Water Signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. They are sympathetic, nurturing, and sensitive. They can be jealous, argumentative, and emotionally out of control at times.

Qualities

There are three Qualities, and they each rule four signs. They decide how we respond to things and interact with other people and our environment. The Qualities are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable.

Cardinal

The Cardinal Signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. These people are go-getters who get things done, and they initiate changes, finding innovative ways of moving things forward. They don’t mind being considered disruptive if they think the results are worth it. Read about Aries here: Aries Zodiac Traits and Love Compatibility

Fixed

The Fixed Signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. They are experts at being organized and sticking to the rules, especially if they can make the rules themselves. They don’t mind being seen as stubborn if they feel they are creating a stable environment.

Mutable

The Mutable Signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. They are highly adaptable people, but they are also intuitive and sympathetic, so they are good at helping other people with transitions. It does not bother them if people call them flighty because they know the most adaptable people are the best survivors. Read about Virgo here: Virgo Traits and Love Compatibility

Dualities

The dualities are Masculine or Feminine, and each of them influences six signs. This has nothing to do with being male or female, but it focuses on how energy is directed and experienced in the environment and relationships.

 Masculine

The Masculine Signs are the Air and Fire Signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. They are assertive, confident, logical, brave, and they are people of action who have mastered self-control. Some people consider them to be domineering, confrontational, and harsh, but they believe they have what it takes to get things done, and they don’t let people’s criticisms of their abilities stop them. Feminine

The Feminine Signs are the Earth and Water Signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces. They absorb energy, adapt to other people and their surroundings, and they are very in touch with their emotions. While they are just as capable as Masculine Signs when it comes to being successful, their focus is more on their inner feelings and they don’t let it bother them if somebody calls them needy or manipulative because they believe emotions are more important than things or other people’s opinions.

What is a Moon Sign?

Your Moon Sign is determined by where the Moon was positioned at your moment of birth and it tells you something entirely different than your Sun Sign does. Your Moon Sign is about your inner emotions and how you express your feelings. Some people say our Moon Sign helps to decide how you love and what kind of people make good friends and romantic partners, and some people say it’s more personal than just that. It decides how you react to change, bad news, and disasters. Some Moon Signs are more emotional, and others are more detached. Some people believe there is no way to change your emotions, but other people believe we have positive and negative traits that our emotions bring out of us, and some people learn all about their Moon Signs so their emotions won’t rule them.

Sun Sign vs Moon Sign

Some people believe your Sun Sign tells you what people you are most comparable with and your personality traits, so you don’t need to know your Moon Sign, but it is better to know them both. What makes the Moon Sign different is it addresses what is deep inside of your heart, not just what prominent habits and tendencies are. Of course, the way you act in good times and bad is pointed out by your Sun Sign, which are all the outward ways you behave. Your Moon Sign is all about what is within you and how you feel. You might not automatically react on your feelings, after all. To read all about your personal Moon Sign, see here: What Moon Sign Am I?

What is a Rising Sign?

The Rising Sign, also called the Ascendant Sign, is the Zodiac Sign that was rising on the Eastern Horizon at the moment you were born. It determines your consciousness and physical appearance. Due to this being based on location, it can affect culture and it affects how you are raised as a child and how you learn to present yourself in public and to strangers. It also represents your basic vitality, the energy you project, and the first impressions you give people. The Rising Sign can change every couple of hours depending on how close to the Equator you are born. Some Astrologers will start by explaining your Ascendant Sign to you before any other sign because it is so important.

Rising Sign vs Sun Sign

Some Astrologers say near age 29, people begin to behave more like their Sun Sign than they do their Ascendant Sign. This happens as they become more confident, and they discover more about who they are inside. They also put less value on caring about how others perceive them. There are some things that never change about you, however, and both your Sun Sign and Ascendant Sign combine to form how you behave and perceive yourself. Others say your Sun Sign is more important to know first because it represents who you are inside, regardless of how you present yourself. Some people believe neither is more important than the other, and who we truly are within combined with how we present ourselves comes together to form our personality.

How to Find Your Signs

How to Find Your Signs

Some people will get their entire Birth Chart cast so they can see where all the planets were when they were born. A Birth Chart is also called a Natal Chart and it is basically a map of the sky the moment you were born. Having this information will show how you and your life in general are affected by the heavenly bodies. If you don’t want to get your entire Birth Chart cast, you can find out just what your Moon, Sun, and Ascendant Signs are armed with a few things; your date of birth, time of birth, and your exact time of birth down to the minute.

If you can’t find that, enter noon as your time of birth. The time is needed because every couple of days, the Moon sign changes, and on some days, there is more than one possibility of what your Moon Sign could be. You can do multiple checks of times, starting with 00:01 A.M. and moving all the way to 11:59 P.M. to see if the Moon Sign changes for that day. Then read the descriptions for the Moon Signs and see which characteristics most closely match yours to decide which is your Moon Sign. You can get your Moon Sign at such online sites as Café Astrology. What’s My Moon Sign? | Cafe Astrology .com

Even a couple of minutes difference will make a different Rising Sign. Your best way to discover an accurate Rising Sign if you don’t have your time of birth is to see a professional Astrologer. They can use a process called rectification to try and find a Rising Sign. They will look at all the Rising Signs for the day you were born and compare them with major events in your life to find what they believe is an accurate Rising Sign.
