What is a Lie?
A lie is something that isn’t true. The person sharing this untrue statement often does so to mislead someone, and sometimes, lies cause a lot of harm. Lies can be told to avoid taking responsibility for something or avoid consequences. A lot of people will lie to avoid upsetting people and a lot of other people lie because if they get caught, they can’t keep doing something they want to. Withholding important information can count as a lie, and that includes only telling half the story when telling the whole story would have a different outcome.
Not everybody lies to be mean or sneaky, though. Some people lie to keep the peace or protect themselves from harm. Some people conceal their identity or whereabouts so a perpetrator cannot attack them again, and some people lie to protect others from harm. Some people will lie to make a good impression and others will lie to get things. Statistically, lying is not rare. It is estimated that about 7% of daily communications are lies and men lie about twice as often as women. High stress situations make us more likely to lie and top reasons for lying are to avoid being around somebody or to protect yourself. Read more about lies here: Lying Statistics. Kinds of Lies
There are a lot of different kinds of lies, but some of the most common forms of lies are little white lies, lies to avoid consequences, and self-deception.
The Little White Lie
Little white lies are told in an attempt to avoid hurting someone. “Does this dress make me look washed out?” is a question people ask that might be answered as lies. “No, of course that dress does not make you look washed out!” when it makes someone look VERY washed out is told so the person wearing the dress does not feel insecure. After all, your friend in the dress is already out in public and there is no sense in them getting upset about an awkward outfit- or is there? When they look in the mirror and discover it is unflattering, they may be upset you did not tell them. Sometimes a white lie preserves somebody’s feelings, but sometimes it hides a truth somebody needs to know. It can be scary to tell the whole truth sometimes, but you can learn to face hears here: Facing and Overcoming Fears
Lies to Avoid Consequences
Nobody wants consequences, and sometimes we lie to avoid them. It is not uncommon for people to say they are innocent of things they are guilty of. Have you ever had a mystery person stealing from lunches at work, but every last person claimed they didn’t do it? One individual had a solution to discover who was stealing their lunch. They put extra hot chili peppers in their sandwich, and when the culprit bit into the sandwich, they immediately got sick. For some people the appeal of doing what they want is too great, and they can’t resist the temptation, but if they are caught, they will say they are innocent just to avoid getting in trouble. Self-Deception
The lies we tell ourselves are sometimes worse than any lie we could ever tell anybody else. When we know our significant other is out cheating, we may lie and tell ourselves they are just working late. When we know we are feeling sick, we may push ourselves to take the kids on that vacation anyways, saying we are just fine. When we know we are being talked about behind our backs, we may push that knowledge aside and go see the people talking about us anyhow because we love them despite it. If anybody needs us to be honest with us, we need it from ourselves. The truth will come out eventually, and chances are, ignoring the truth won’t fix anything or hold off consequences. It might even make things worse. Read about being your best self here: How to Be Your Best Self
How to Tell if They are Lying
Anybody could lie to anybody about anything at any time. The people we trust count on us to not investigate things they tell us. What do you do if something somebody tells you seems suspicious and what sort of cues can alert you that maybe someone is being dishonest? The physical cues like nervousness and lack of eye contact might be a sign they are lying. If what they are saying just doesn’t sound true, maybe you should investigate. If someone keeps contradicting their own story, they just might be lying. If you have been warned about someone being dishonest, maybe they are.
Body Language
Your first clues that you are being lied to are body language. If someone usually makes great eye contact when they are talking to you, but they just can’t seem to suddenly, maybe they are lying. If they are behaving as if they are nervous, and you can’t see a reason why, they might be lying to you. If they are using unusual tones of voice, perhaps they are lying.
Avoiding Eye Contact
If someone always makes eye contact, and they just can’t look at you when they are telling you something, you have every reason to be suspicious. Staring directly at you longer than usual might also be a sign of lying. If you have known somebody for a while and they always make eye contact in one particular way, when that changes, there is a reason. That could be due to them lying to you and it doesn’t take magic to tell. Read about different kinds of magic here: Different Types of Magic
Nervousness
If somebody is telling you something and they are acting nervous, there is a reason. Fidgeting, shaking, gulping, or a dry throat are all signs of nervousness. Breaking into a sweat or getting short of breath are signs of anxiety, and if they don’t have anxiety issues, what are they suddenly nervous about? Why are they nervous? Ask them. Unless they can provide a satisfactory answer, investigate what they are telling you because they may be lying. Read about using crystals to help with anxiety here: The Best Stones for Anxiety
Unusual Tones of Voice
Why is somebody who usually has a loud voice suddenly speaking so softly, you can barely hear them? Why are they laughing in the middle of a sentence when nothing is funny? Why are they clearing their throats a lot, but they are not sick? They might be lying about something. If their voice is suddenly higher pitched, their vocal cords could be tensing up because they are stressed, and worried you will discover their lie. If they suddenly get a lot louder than usual, they may be feeling the need to defend their lies. Nobody ever complained about the loud clear sound of songbirds and you can read about the spiritual meaning of blue jays here: Blue Jay Spiritual Meaning
Difficulty Talking
Difficulty finding words can be a sign of dishonesty. If they are saying “Um” a lot more than usual, or taking a long time to tell you what they are communicating, they might be making their story up as they go along. If they are rambling on and on and they usually don’t, they might be lying. If somebody who you talk to often is suddenly avoiding talking to you, they might be hiding something and they think if they can avoid you, they won’t have to tell you the truth. Look them in the eye and ask them to talk plainly with you and tell you what is going on. If they don’t tell the truth, you may have to find out some other way. Non-Physical Cues
Some people have mastered the art of lying so well, they give no physical cues whatsoever. That’s okay, because it is still possible to discover lies. If their story just isn’t adding up, it might be a lie. If they talk about the situation more than once, and they don’t tell the same story every time, that could be because they lied. If somebody warns you about somebody, saying they are dishonest, pay attention, because that might be the truth.
It Doesn’t Make Sense
It’s not always difficult to tell if somebody is lying. Especially if they are telling a difficult to believe story. The more unlikely something seems, the more you need to investigate it. Quietly listen and let them tell their whole story, and then do detective work. If you are able to prove they were telling the truth, well, strange things do happen sometimes. It’s not wrong to find out, though. If you have known your soulmate for a long time, and somebody else tells you something about them that doesn’t sound true, why not go ask about it? Did the person say not to say anything to them? Well that means maybe you should. If something just doesn’t make sense, it might be a lie. Trust your instincts and find out for yourself instead of taking their word for it. Read about finding your soulmate here: What’s a Soulmate/How Do You Find Them?
They Contradict Themselves
Maybe somebody tells you something and you don’t think to question what they said but then it comes up again and they tell you something completely different. If both of the things you were told can’t be true at the same time, it appears you have been lied to. Go ahead and ask again and see what you are told. If the person hesitates, or stumbles for words, or even says they don’t remember what they told you, that could be that they forgot what story they made up. Always investigate if somebody told you multiple different things that cannot all be true at the same time because chances are they lied to you. You might want to consult a psychic to find out what is true, but are psychics legit? Find out here: Are Psychics Real?
You Are Warned
Anytime somebody comes to warn you about someone, pay attention to what they are telling you. If you are like a lot of people, you prefer to find out for yourself whether somebody is trustworthy or not. If you are alerted to some things to watch for, however, do that. Some people have a personal bias that isn’t fair, but there are some people who do know things that happened that you have not witnessed. The truth comes to us from different people sometimes. When someone has lied and somebody else points it out, pay attention and find out who is telling the truth. Sometimes a good friend is helpful in finding out the truth. Can All Lies Be Detected?
Unfortunately, some people have mastered the art of lying and show no clues they are not telling the truth. However, these people who lie all the time will eventually become known for lying. Their reputation for being deceptive and untrustworthy will spread, and people will eventually know they are liars. That doesn’t help new people who they can fool, but as time passes, even the new people will figure it out. It can be disheartening when somebody lies all the time, and it seems like everybody just automatically believes them. Especially when you warn people, and they seem to ignore your warnings. Time will pass and their lies will be discovered. Nobody can say you didn’t warn them.
So it’s true we all tell small lies like “I have an appointment” when we want to turn down an invitation we feel pressured to accept. It is also true that some people don’t seem to be able to tell the truth to save their own lives. Lies happen because people want to be misleading, but you don’t have to resign yourself to believing everything you are told. You can detect a lot of lies if you watch body language and use your instincts to decide if something you are told makes sense. Even the master manipulators will eventually be found out. Never doubt that the truth will be known. Watch for clues, and you can be an expert in detecting lies.
