Are Miracles Real?

By Lady Saoirse

Learn all about miracles including what they are, what type of miracles there are and find out if they really exist.

What is a Miracle?

Some people speak of times when they have witnessed miracles. Maybe healing occurred when doctors said there was no chance of recovery, or a very important family heirloom thought to be long gone appeared seemingly out of thin air. Drawing meaning from these lucky events that science just doesn’t seem to have any explanation for may have you believing you are watched over by an ancestor or a god. Just what is a miracle anyways, though?

Before defining what experts say a miracle is, let’s examine the statistics when it comes to belief in miracles. In a HuffPost article, it is stated that about eighty percent of Americans believe in miracles and even more surprisingly, about seventy three percent of physicians believe miracles exist. Of those physicians, more than half say they have personally witnessed miraculous healing. The article also says that about two hundred million Pentecostals in ten different nations say they have witnessed miracles and you can read that article here: Are Miracles Real? | HuffPost Religion

Miracles are defined by Merriam-Webster online as:

“1: an extraordinary event manifesting diving intervention in human affairs: the healing miracles described in the gospels.

2: an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment: The bridge is a miracle of engineering.

3: Christian Science: a divinely natural phenomenon experienced humanly as the fulfillment of spiritual law.”

Miracles are defined by Wikipedia this way:

“A miracle is an event that is inexplicable by natural or scientific laws and accordingly gets attributed to some supernatural or preternatural cause. Various religions often attribute a phenomenon characterized as miraculous to the actions of a supernatural being, (especially) a deity, a magician, a miracle worker, a saint, or a religious leader.” You can read more from that article here: Miracle - Wikipedia

Basically, miracles are amazing things that happen which seem like they should be impossible were it not for some intervention that goes above and beyond normal human abilities. Inspirational readings provide written accounts of miracles ranging from spiritual healing, psychic abilities, and even deeper religious mysteries like asking spirit guides for signs from the divine.

The Bible

In the Bible, it is pointed out in many places that there is nothing impossible because their god can make anything happen. In the Gospel of Mark 9:23, it says “ Everything is possible for one who believes.” This brings in a question of what does it mean to be optimistic? If you are radiating positivity, you can make things happen that some people won’t even try to do if they don’t believe it can be done. Another passage comes from The Gospel of Matthew, 17:20. “ Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Another scripture in the Gospel of Matthew 19: 26 says “ With man this is impossible, but with god all things are possible.” Miracles happen for people through faith in both their god and in themselves in these scriptures.

The Quran

Islam teaches miracles are extraordinary events contrary to natural laws and that can only happen due to divine intervention. One passage in Quran 7:115-120 says “ O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?” He (Moses) said: “Throw you (first).” When they threw they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic. And We revealed to Moses, “Throw your stick,” and behold! It swallowed up straight away all the falsehoods which they showed. Thus truth was confirmed, and all that they did was made of no effect. So they were defeated there and returned disgraced. And the magicians fell down prostrate.” In this passage, the magicians did illusions, but Moses through the power of his god was able to make something unnatural happen, and the magicians recognized it as a miracle.

In Islam it is believed that two types of miracles occur. The first is at the request of people calling for proof of the validity of a Prophet and the other happens all on its own without people calling for one. However, for many Muslims, the greatest miracle is the word of Allah, the Quran, which is seen as divine revelation to the Prophet Muhammed. Other things believed to be miracles in Islam is that Muhammed split the moon to prove his power, and that many things in nature themselves are miracles such as the naturally occurring division of fresh water from salt water. What Kind of Miracles Are There?

Some people would say there is no limit to what type of things can occur when there is a miracle, and certainly, everything cannot be listed in one article. However, they generally fall into miracles that entail psychic phenomenon, miracles from the divine, and then miracles on the more physical, or mundane level.

Psychic Miracles

Some consider intuitive people to be a special type of miracle. An intuitive person can tell you things that are unknown, and beneath the surface of all that is obvious. At other times they can tell you how to be positive, which can help you to change your reality, and they can speak with the dead, which some people believe that science cannot explain. Then there are people who have the gift of prophecy and their gift comes to them in dreams.

Psychic Powers

psychic powers

Psychic ability is the ability to perceive things beyond the five senses of taste, smell, hearing, sight, and touch. There are countless types of psychic powers, but here we will discuss the miraculous powers of positivity, mediumship, and prophetic dreams. Positivity

Do you know people who seem like they can do pretty much anything even if they are things it seems like nobody else can do? Have you seen them solve family problems, find resources when money is especially tight, offer psychic protection to people who seemed lost, and pretty much do anything they set their minds to no matter what? They have a secret you can benefit from. It’s being optimistic and keeping a positive mindset that makes these people so successful. If you believe you cannot accomplish something, oftentimes, you won’t even try, but if you believe it can be done, chances are, you will achieve it. Always remember this famous poem when you worry something cannot be accomplished. It was written paying homage to such positive thinkers who do all the things it seems like nobody else can do:

It Couldn’t Be Done

By Edgar Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,

But he with a chuckle replied

That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one

Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On his face. If he worried he hid it.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;

At least no one ever has done it”;

But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,

And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,

Without any doubting or quiddit,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophesy failure;

There are thousands to point out to you one by one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing

That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Mediumship

The ability to speak to the dead, often acting as an intermediary between them and the living is known as mediumship. Sometimes it is called “talking to dead people” and it is not something that everybody can do. Some people don’t believe it is possible because dead people no longer have bodies, but mediums speak to spirits on the spiritual level, which is not the same as speaking to a living person. A lot of people go to see mediums for psychic help in communicating with their deceased loved ones. Each medium has their own techniques for communication, and some people develop this gift on their own. It is considered a miracle that somebody could speak with the dead by some. Prophetic Dreams

What is a premonition foretold in a dream and how can you tell the difference between a dream that will come to pass and an ordinary dream that will never happen in the waking world? That depends on you. Some people can tell a dream is foretelling the future because while they are dreaming it, they feel as if it is physically happening, and they may even wake up tired. Other people’s prophetic dreams seem more surreal than ordinary dreams and still other people’s psychic dreams are more symbolic and show them how they are feeling more than they foretell events. In this case, interpreting the dream will show what the meaning of the dream is. To find out what some of your dreams might mean, see our dream interpretations: A-Z Dream Meanings Glossary

Divine Miracles

Divine miracles are the ones that a goddess, god, or spirit intervenes in, and makes things happen. Angels and spirit guides are just two kinds of divine beings who create miracles. Creatures like cardinals and butterflies are also believed to be miracle makers, and then there is something very special that creative people swear by, and that is the miracle of inspiration.

Spirit Guides

The very term “spirit guide” may call to mind mystical images of supernatural creatures who magically appear in our lives and disappear just as soon as they have enlightened us, but real spirit guides are not so mysterious. They go by many names including Reverend, Priestess, Rabbi, Imam, or even just teacher. These are people whose lives are devoted to spiritually guiding other people, and the lessons they teach enlighten, strengthen, educate, and empower countless people. These are people who have taken vows to their deity or deities and who listen to the words of their gods to minister to their devotees. Some people say that without their human spiritual teachers, that they would not live such good lives, and that sort of help is truly a miracle to them.

Messengers

Divine messages are brought to people in many ways, and while human spirit guides can relay these messages, so can other beings. Cardinals, butterflies, and angels are well-known divine messengers.

Cardinals

Spiritually, the meaning of cardinals is that of fidelity, that love is on the way, the presence of the ancestors, and passion. It is believed by some people that if you are single and you see a cardinal, you are being told that a lover is coming your way soon, but if you are in a relationship that is going poorly, a cardinal sighting is telling you to go ahead and break things off. Seeing a cardinal flying is a sign that changes are coming and it is believed that when you hear cardinals singing, you are being told that any sorrows you are having will disappear. Perhaps most importantly, seeing a cardinal tells you the miracle of you are being watched over by either ancestors or angels is happening. To read more about cardinals, see here: What is Red Cardinal Spiritual Meaning?

Butterflies

Butterflies symbolize transformation, safety, happiness, beauty, and freedom. Blue butterflies bring good luck and monarch butterflies are seen as a sign that you are on the right path to achieve your goals and dreams. Seeing a white butterfly signifies that a new romance is about to begin and seeing yellow butterflies means that you are about to get news of a happy announcement. Beyond all these good things, butterflies are believed to be connected with the dead and to bring miraculous messages to the living. If a butterfly lands on you and stays for a while after the passing of a loved one, it means their spirit is visiting you and a butterfly coming to visit but not necessarily landing on you means your loved one who recently passed away is sending a message they have peacefully passed on to the afterlife. Angels

Angels

While some people believe the miracle of being protected by angels happens every day, it is believed angels do so much more than that. In books of the Bible, various angels including the Archangel Michael speak directly to human beings, bringing messages from their god. Michael told Abraham to sacrifice a ram to Jehovah instead of his son Isaac and Michael acts in his god’s behalf, allowing people a chance to repent so they can go to heaven. The angel Gabriel, known as Jibreel, or The Holy Spirit, in the Quran was responsible for communicating the word of Allah to his prophets, and this passage in the Quran from 16:102 states: “Say, the Holy Spirit (Jibreel) has brought the revelation from your Lord in Truth, in order to strengthen those who believe, and as a Guide and Glad Tidings to Muslims.”

Inspiration

Some people believe the human mind naturally draws inspiration, but others believe that inspiration comes from beyond and that inspiration is miraculous. The Greeks had three original Muses, or goddesses of inspiration, and later believed there were nine of them. The Muses gave people ideas for the arts and written literature, but also history and astronomy. The original three Muses brought forgetfulness of pain and made obligations go away. These goddesses gave people ideas to help them to be able to write, think and create, and they were also believed to inspire harmony.

The Norse father god Odin was the god of many things including poetry, knowledge and inspiration. He inspired people to do divination by giving them the runes, and he retrieved the mead that allowed creation of poetry and shared some with human beings. Mundane Miracles

While some miracles come from psychic gifts, or divine beings, others come from more earth-based things that human beings create and share for one another. While many are independent and take care of themselves, we can’t do everything all on our own and are called to either accept help or give it at times, and it creates such a positive change in someone’s life, they call it a miracle. Some natural healers use reiki healing energy to create positive changes in the human body, and there is another miracle we create with hard work called abundance.

Giving

When somebody you know is going without something and you help out by giving it to them be it food, a roof over their heads, clothes, a new job, or even just a shoulder to cry on, you can help to improve their situation so much, they say it is a miracle. For example, if food prices have skyrocketed, that will put a strain on financially depressed households. If somebody who has more income were to donate food or money to a cause, and people struggling to get enough food could get help, it would improve their lives greatly. Some things done to help don’t cost money, like helping mow a neighbor’s lawn the Summer they broke their leg or pulling a bird out of a swimming pool it got trapped in. Being helped when we cannot help ourselves is quite the miracle!

Reiki

Does reiki work? Some people swear by it. Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan. Reiki practitioners move the qi, or life force energy through the body to alter the patient’s overall health. While reiki has not been proven scientifically to fight disease, it has been said it is used to help fight headache, fatigue, emotional disorders, and provide an overall sense of wellbeing. Some say it cures all diseases, but that has not been proven. To become a healer, everything you need to know about reiki can be learned through a school. While there is no substitute for in person learning, there are some online courses you can begin while searching for a local reiki academy. You can read more about reiki classes here: Reiki

Abundance

Abundance is a miracle we can create for ourselves. Doing the work required to achieve something will yield great results and your success will bring many blessings. If you have always dreamed of being a Veterinarian, going to school, doing all the required classes and graduating from the program is the way to get the certifications to get that job. If you don’t put in the work, you will never become a Veterinarian, however. If you want to start running marathons, you will have to train, possibly with a teacher, and before you know it, you will be crossing the finish line to that goal. While we can certainly pray for help when we are trying to bring abundance into our lives, there is no substitute for rolling up our sleeves and doing what it takes to get it. You can create the miracle of abundance for yourself one step at a time.

Do Miracles Exist?

If you ask the general public, yes, miracles are real. A CBS news poll offers insight to what people are saying about belief in miracles. Findings showed most people said they had not witnessed a miracle themselves, but four out of five people stated they believe in miracles. While more said they believed in miracles than not, plenty who believed in miracles reported being skeptical. Almost half the people consulted said they think that some of the things called miracles can simply be explained by science and while specifically, sixty three percent polled said they had not witnessed a miracle, over thirty percent stated they had.

While it seems like a lot of people believe in things science can’t explain, we can’t be so quick to dismiss their beliefs as searching for fictional symbols of good fortune. Over sixty percent said they do not believe healing can happen just by being touched and one quarter responding say they were never cured simply by people praying for their healing. So, it doesn’t look like most of the population is going to throw out science or stop seeing a doctor in favor of just saying a prayer. More from this study can be read here: Poll: Do You Believe In Miracles - CBS News

Despite all the written accounts you can find that miracles happen, there are people who simply don’t believe in them. American President Thomas Jefferson removed sections from the Bible he felt was altered to show false miracles and he had this to say about miracles: “ The establishment of theinnocent and genuine character of this benevolent moralist, and the rescuing it from the imputation of imposture, which has resulted from artificial systems, [footnote: e.g. The immaculate conception of Jesus, his deification, the creation of the world by him, his miraculous powers, his resurrection and visible ascension, his corporeal presence in the Eucharist, the Trinity; original sin, atonement, regeneration, election, orders of Hierarchy, etc. —T.J.] invented by ultra-Christian sects, unauthorized by a single word ever uttered by him, is a most desirable object, and one to which Priestley has successfully devoted his labors and learning."

Scottish philosopher David Hume was another who did not believe in miracles. His reasoning was that as an atheist, he did not believe in a god, and that a god could not therefore intervene. He said that it was wrong to assume natural laws never changed and a miracle would basically defy science which he deemed impossible. He said it is wise to base belief on evidence, not believe what you want to, and that things that defy nature are not going to happen, so miracles are not real. You can read more of what Hume had to say in depth here: The Argument Against Miracles: Unscientific, Incredible, etc.? (faithsaves.net) Somebody else who argued against miracles was Elbert Hubbard, and he said “A miracle is an event described by those to whom it was told by people who did not see it."

Regardless of what other people have to say, here is the real question- Do you believe in miracles and how do you believe they happen? If you believe something has happened that would have been impossible without divine intervention, nobody can tell you that you are wrong. For some people, waking up in the morning every day is a miracle, and for others, the people who they love are their miracles. May your life be filled with miracles and may you be a miracle to those around you. Find out more about miracles with a psychic reading: Online Psychic Readings
